CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 52: College Greek-Life Transparency Legislation Passes Higher Education Committee

Full vitae

California State Assembly District 52 recently issued the following announcement.

Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona) presented Assembly Bill 1155, the Campus-Affiliated Sorority and Fraternity Transparency Act, to the Assembly Higher Education Committee where it was voted out. Amendments to the legislation will mean Greek life affiliated sororities and fraternities at California colleges will more publicly display information critical for a new student to make an informed decision.

“Too many lives have been impacted by hazing at California colleges and universities, 2019 was no exception. While progress has been made in curbing sexual violence and excessive drinking, there is still a culture on campuses and within some organizations, which must change. With more transparency, students and families can make informed decisions about the social and professional organizations they choose to invest time, resources, and personal safety into joining” Rodriguez said after the bill's passage.

The future amendments to AB 1155 will require higher education institutions to publicly post, and campus-affiliated sororities or fraternities to report, the following information:

  • Outcomes of Allegations of Misconduct
  • Number of Citations or Disciplinary Actions Related to Sexual Assault
  • Active and New Members
  • Average Membership GPA
  • Charitable Fundraising and Volunteer Hours
  • Current Conduct and Recognition Status
