Rep. Juan Vargas responds to Clairemont shooting with statements on safety and support

Rep. Juan Vargas, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 52nd district since 2013, addressed the recent shooting in Clairemont through a series of social media posts on May 18 and May 20, expressing concern for the community and gratitude toward first responders.

On May 18, Vargas wrote, “Devastated by news of today’s shooting in Clairemont. As we await further details, I’m praying for the Islamic Center of San Diego community and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence. Thank you to law enforcement and first responders on the scene.”

Later that day, he posted another message: “Everyone deserves to be safe in their community, schools, and places of worship. And hate has no place in San Diego or anywhere else. I’m grateful to first responders who ran towards danger to help. As our community continues to mourn, my prayers are with the victims, their”

Vargas has represented California’s 52nd district since replacing Bob Filner in 2013 and previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate. Born in National City in 1961, Vargas is a long-time resident of San Diego and holds degrees from the University of San Diego and Harvard University.
