Rep. Juan Vargas, who has represented California’s 52nd district in the U.S. Congress since 2013, recently addressed several issues on his social media account, including a moment of silence for victims of a local shooting, Memorial Day commemorations, and federal funding for immigration enforcement.
On May 24, Vargas posted about participating in a tribute for victims of violence at a religious center: “This week, I joined my colleagues in a moment of silence for the three victims of the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Amin Abdullah, Mansour “Abul Izz” Kahzia, and Nader Awad acted with extraordinary courage to save countless lives. They will never be https://t.co/M0hGKJZ0BH”.
A day later, on May 25, he marked Memorial Day by honoring fallen service members: “This Memorial Day, and every day, we remember the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. We owe them more than words can express, and we’re forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”
On May 26, Vargas criticized Republican efforts to increase funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), writing, “This is the agency Republicans are trying to send billions of dollars to with no oversight and accountability. This is appalling. Absolutely NO funding for ICE as they inflict pain and suffering on families across the country. https://t.co/YL1jLRr0a1”.
Vargas was born in National City, California in 1961 and currently resides in San Diego. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego in 1983 before obtaining a law degree from Harvard University in 1991. Prior to serving in Congress since 2013—where he succeeded Bob Filner—he served terms both in the California State Assembly (2000-2006) and California Senate (2010-2013).
