Rep. Juan Vargas, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 52nd district since 2013, addressed constituents and global audiences through a series of posts on social media this week, touching on Hanukkah celebrations, an attack in Australia, and environmental agreements.
On December 15, Vargas extended greetings for Hanukkah to his district and beyond: “This evening marks the start of Hanukkah. For everyone celebrating here in CA-52 and around the world, may these next eight nights bring peace, light, and blessings.”
Later that day, he commented on a violent incident abroad: “I’m absolutely horrified by this vile attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia. Antisemitism, hate, and bigotry have no place in our world. My prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted.” The post was made as reports emerged regarding violence targeting Jewish communities during holiday observances.
On December 16, Vargas addressed cross-border environmental concerns: “I welcome the new U.S.-Mexico agreement on steps to address cross-border pollution in the Tijuana River. I’m also glad to see that this agreement includes provisions I pushed for, like funding for ongoing maintenance and a plan to address the buildup of sediment in Smuggler’s”
Vargas has served California’s 52nd District since replacing Bob Filner in 2013. Before joining Congress, he was a member of the California State Assembly from 2000 to 2006 and served in the California Senate from 2010 to 2013. Born in National City in 1961 and currently residing in San Diego at age 62, Vargas holds degrees from the University of San Diego (BA) and Harvard University (JD).
